The Work is the Proof
I don't have a computer science degree.
For a long time, this made me feel like I did not belong. When you are in the tech world, you meet many smart people from great schools. I felt like a fraud.
But I had to find a way to get work. When you don't have a degree, you can't show a piece of paper to prove you know things.
This turned out to be a good thing.
It forced me to do the only thing I could do: build things. I had to create real, working software. My proof was not on paper. My proof was in the work itself.
This taught me what really matters. A client does not care about your grades. They care if you can solve their problem. A user does not care if your code is perfect. They care if the app works and is easy to use.
When you learn this way, you learn how to solve real problems. You learn how to find answers for yourself when you get stuck. This is a skill you learn in the real world, by doing the work.
Now that I run my own company, this is how I look at things. When I meet someone who wants to work with us, I don't ask about their school first. I ask, "Can I see something you have built?"
A small project you are proud of is more interesting than any certificate.
So if you are learning on your own, do not worry. Your path is a good one. Do not focus on what you don't have. Focus on what you can create.
Just keep building. The work is the proof.
